Royal Ascot’s strict dress code rule that forbids anyone from wearing popular clothing items

Royal Ascot attendees are being reminded of the event’s strict dress code as the five-day racing festival returns to Berkshire this week.

The prestigious event, held annually at Ascot Racecourse, attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators and remains one of the most formal occasions in the British sporting calendar.

While Royal Ascot is known for its racing, it is also closely associated with fashion, with guests expected to follow specific clothing rules depending on which enclosure they are attending.

The rules vary across the Royal Enclosure, Queen Anne Enclosure, Village Enclosure and Windsor Enclosure, but organisers make clear that some items are not permitted anywhere at the racecourse.

Among the clothing items banned across all dress codes are trainers, sneakers, and sports footwear.

The rule means racegoers wearing the popular everyday footwear could risk being refused entry if their outfit does not meet the required standard.

Travel creator Travel Viva previously highlighted the warning on TikTok while sharing advice for anyone planning to attend the event.

Among her tips in her video, she said: “Don’t break the dress code. No trainers, hats required!”

The rule applies across all enclosures, though the wider dress code differs depending on the ticket held by each guest.

Those attending the Royal Enclosure or Queen Anne Enclosure are expected to follow a more formal dress code, with requirements including morning dress or smart suits, as well as traditional closed-toe dress shoes.

The Village and Windsor Enclosures have a slightly more relaxed approach, but guests are still required to wear smart daywear. Trainers, denim, and shorts are explicitly banned in those areas as well.

As pointed out by Liverpool Echo, the Royal Ascot’s official guidance states: “Styling your summer occasionwear is an integral part of the Royal Ascot tradition, woven into the very essence of the event.”

“Each enclosure at Royal Ascot upholds its own distinguished dress code. We kindly encourage you to familiarise yourself with the guidelines specific to your enclosure prior to your visit.”

Royal Ascot 2026 runs from Tuesday, June 16 to Saturday, June 20 at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire.

The event is one of the UK’s largest sporting fixtures, attracting more than 250,000 spectators across its five-day programme.

As well as the ban on trainers, Royal Ascot lists several other clothing items and styles that are not allowed under any dress code.

Regarding specific enclosures, the website adds: “Please note the following are not permitted within any dress code.”

The banned list includes fancy dress, novelty patterns and fabrics, trainers, denim, leggings, and shorts.

Novelty patterns and fabrics include items featuring slogans, phrases, promotional messaging, brand logos, or cartoon imagery.

The guidance means those attending are being urged to check the rules for their specific enclosure before travelling to the racecourse.

Royal Ascot has long been recognised for its formal dress traditions, with organisers continuing to enforce clear standards for guests throughout the week.

Anyone planning to attend is advised to familiarise themselves with the official dress code in advance.
