Prince Harry and Prince William allegedly had ‘cruel’ nicknames for their stepmother, Camilla.
While tensions within the Royal Family have been widely discussed over the years, especially following Prince Harry’s explosive memoir Spare, fresh attention is now being paid to just how deeply Princes William and Harry reportedly struggled with Camilla’s role in their lives during their teenage years.
The revelations have reignited debate online, with royal fans sharply divided over whether the nicknames were understandable reactions from two grieving young boys or unnecessarily harsh attacks on the woman who eventually became Queen.
The controversy comes amid ongoing scrutiny surrounding Harry’s fractured relationship with the monarchy, particularly after he publicly criticized several members of the Royal Family in interviews, documentaries, and his bestselling memoir.
Although Harry recently insisted he still considers himself part of the Royal Family, past comments about Camilla continue to attract backlash years later.

The complicated history
For decades, King Charles and Queen Camilla’s relationship has remained one of the most controversial chapters in modern royal history.
Long before Camilla officially married Charles in 2005, their romance had already become heavily scrutinized due to Charles’ marriage to Princess Diana.
Diana herself famously referenced the situation during her now-iconic 1995 Panorama interview when she said there were ‘three people’ in her marriage.
At the time, Prince William and Prince Harry were still children trying to process the collapse of their parents’ relationship under the glare of global media attention.
In Spare, Harry revealed that both he and William pleaded with their father not to marry Camilla, even though they ultimately accepted the relationship because they wanted Charles to be happy.
“We didn’t think it was necessary,” Harry later explained during a television interview promoting the memoir, per Hello. “We thought it would do more harm than good.”
Harry also described how deeply the situation affected William emotionally, writing that his older brother had long carried suspicions about Camilla’s relationship with Charles before those fears were eventually confirmed.
According to Harry, William felt ‘tremendous guilt’ afterward for not confronting the situation sooner.
The emotional strain reportedly created a lasting distance between the princes and their future stepmother, especially during their teenage years when tensions inside the royal household were already high.
Fans are divided over the ‘cruel’ nicknames
As details of the nicknames resurfaced online, reactions from royal watchers were immediate, and deeply divided.
Some critics accused Harry of continuing to stir up unnecessary drama within the family years after the release of Spare.
One commenter wrote: “That’s the way to mend fences,” sarcastically referencing Harry’s repeated public criticisms of the monarchy.
Another added: “At this point, who cares what Harry thinks? It’s either mudslinging or more family drama.”
Others argued that Harry and William’s feelings should be viewed through the lens of grief and childhood trauma following Princess Diana’s death.
“He has every right to feel the way he does,” one supporter wrote online.
Another defended the brothers by saying: “People forget they were children dealing with an incredibly public family breakdown.”

The debate intensified further after excerpts from royal author Tom Quinn’s book Yes Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants resurfaced, claiming palace staff were aware of the names William and Harry allegedly used privately when discussing Camilla.
Royal commentators have also suggested that the princes’ distrust grew over fears that Camilla was working to rehabilitate her public image through strategic media relationships.
In Spare, Harry even described Camilla as ‘dangerous’ because of the connections she allegedly forged within the British press while attempting to improve public perception ahead of eventually becoming Queen.
Still, despite years of tension, relationships inside the Royal Family have reportedly evolved over time.
Prince William and Princess Kate are now believed to share a far more stable relationship with King Charles and Queen Camilla, particularly following Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from royal duties in 2020.
Harry, meanwhile, has occasionally softened his tone publicly, at one point saying he has ‘a huge amount of compassion’ for Camilla and acknowledging the pressures she faced entering the royal institution.
Harry’s most brutal swipe in Spare
Although the brothers reportedly used multiple nicknames for Camilla over the years, it was Harry’s description of her in Spare that generated some of the strongest public reaction.
Throughout the memoir, Harry repeatedly reflected on the emotional fallout caused by Charles and Camilla’s relationship during his childhood. He described sensing another presence in his parents’ marriage long before fully understanding what was happening.
“We sensed the presence,” Harry wrote, describing how he and William experienced the ‘downstream effects’ of the relationship.
As excerpts from the memoir circulated globally, readers became fixated on the harsh language Harry used to describe his stepmother.
But according to reports and royal authors, that wasn’t the only unflattering label used within the family.
Fans were especially shocked after claims surfaced that Harry and William privately referred to Camilla using several brutal nicknames during their teenage years — including comparisons to fictional villains.
According to reports from royal insiders and Tom Quinn’s book, the princes allegedly called Camilla ‘Lady Macbeth,’ suggesting manipulation and ambition, while another nickname compared her to the infamous Disney villain ‘Cruella de Vil.’
However, the nickname that continues to attract the most attention — and arguably the harshest emotional sting — was the one Prince Harry publicly used himself in Spare.
He repeatedly referred to Queen Camilla as the ‘Other Woman.’ Ouch.
