King Charles Opens a Stunning New Garden at Windsor Castle Inspired by the Planet Venus and It Is Unlike Anything the Grounds Have Seen Before

King Charles III has spent much of his adult life advocating for the environment, biodiversity, and sustainable land management — long before such causes became fashionable. His private garden at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire has been a working expression of those values for decades.

Now, he has brought that same philosophy to Windsor Castle — and the result is something unlike anything the 200-year-old grounds have seen before.

Charles, born Nov. 14, 1948, has overseen the transformation of the former East Terrace Garden at Windsor Castle into what is being called the Venus Garden — a new biodiverse space whose design was inspired by the petal-shaped orbit of the planet Venus as it moves across the sky.

The garden has been 18 months in the making and will open to the public on July 16, 2026, remaining accessible through Sept. 13, 2026. Admission is included in the standard Windsor Castle entry ticket, with free access available to those on Universal Credit and other qualifying benefits.

The East Terrace Garden has had many lives over its 200-year history — serving as a bowling green and, during World War II, as an allotment for growing food.

In its latest transformation, it has become a sanctuary for wildlife, featuring perennial beds, evergreen hedge-lined pathways, and planting chosen to support pollinators and increase biodiversity across the seasons.

Adam Scott, gardens and nursery manager at Windsor Castle, said: “After around 18 months of careful transformation, we are delighted to open the Venus Garden to visitors this summer, marking the start of an important new chapter in the garden’s 200-year history.”

The inspiration behind the design — and the connection to Venus — is a story worth knowing.

The Venus Garden takes its name and its structure from the geometric pattern traced by the planet Venus over an eight-year cycle as observed from Earth — a five-petalled rosette known since ancient times as a symbol of beauty, harmony, and natural order.

The design of the garden reflects that pattern in its layout, linking the space to the same principles of universal symbolism that Charles has incorporated elsewhere, including the Cosmati Pavement-inspired Topiary Garden added to Windsor’s grounds in 2023.

That earlier garden was conceived as a place of peace, contemplation, and wildlife support. The Venus Garden continues in that tradition, with planting chosen not only for its visual impact but for its ecological value — designed to offer beauty, interest, and biodiversity throughout the seasons and for generations to come.

Charles has long been known for his meticulous approach to gardening. His influence is already visible across Windsor’s wider grounds — in the new woodland planted, the replanted hedgerows, and the parkland trees introduced since he became Ranger of Windsor Great Park in 2022.

Before working with the King on an RHS project, gardener Frances Tophill was reportedly warned in advance about his exacting standards.

The Venus Garden is the latest expression of a passion that has defined him longer than any of his titles. It opens to the public on July 16, 2026 — and for visitors who make the trip, it will offer something rarely found on a standard royal tour: a living record of a king who has spent his life trying to leave the land in better shape than he found it.

Are you a fan of King Charles and his passion for nature and gardening? Do you think the Venus Garden is a fitting legacy for a King who has championed the environment his entire life? Let us know in the comments and pass this on to your family, friends, and other royal fans out there!
