Princess Catherine Breaks Silence On ‘Fear & Exhaustion’ Of Cancer But Also Unexpected Moments Of Kindness

The Princess of Wales marked World Cancer Day by sharing an emotional video acknowledging patients, families, and caregivers affected by cancer. Released via the official Instagram account of The Prince and Princess of Wales, the message featured footage from Princess Catherine’s January 2025 visit to The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, where she serves as Joint Patron alongside the Prince of Wales.

Princess Catherine’s cancer journey began in January 2024 following abdominal surgery that was initially believed to be non-cancerous. Further testing revealed the presence of cancer, prompting a course of preventative chemotherapy. In March 2024, she publicly confirmed her diagnosis in a recorded message, offering clarity and reassurance during a period of widespread concern.

“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful,” she said and continued, “However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.”

She also spoke candidly about the emotional impact on her family, particularly her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. “This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.”

By choosing transparency, Princess Catherine reinforced the importance of compassion, patience, and understanding in conversations surrounding illness.

In her Feb. 4, 2026, World Cancer Day message, Princess Catherine addressed the global cancer community with empathy and reassurance:

“On World Cancer Day, my thoughts are with everyone who is facing a cancer diagnosis, undergoing treatment or finding their way through recovery.”

She expanded on the collective nature of the experience, saying:

“Cancer touches so many lives. Not only patients, but the families and friends and caregivers who walk beside them. As anyone who has experienced this journey will know, it’s not linear. There are moments of fear and exhaustion. But also moments of strength, kindness, and profound connection.”

Her message underscored the need for sustained emotional support beyond medical treatment:

“Today is a reminder of the importance of care, understanding and hope. Please know you are not alone.”

Following treatment, Princess Catherine confirmed in January 2025 that she was in remission.

“It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focused on recovery,” she said, adding, “As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal.”

She later offered rare insight into the challenges that follow active treatment:

“You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment. Treatment’s done, then it’s like, ‘I can crack on, get back to normal,’ but actually, the phase afterwards is really, really difficult.”

Describing the process as transformative, she explained, “You have to find your new normal and that takes time…and it’s a roller coaster, it’s not smooth, like you expect it to be,” concluding, “But the reality is you go through hard times.”
