Duchess of Kent’s Funeral: The United Kingdom Mourns a Gentle Soul of the Royal Family

Introduction

On September 16, 2025, the United Kingdom bid farewell to Katharine, Duchess of Kent, one of the most humble and beloved members of the British Royal Family.

Her funeral at Westminster Cathedral marked not only the end of an era but also a historic moment — the first Catholic funeral for a senior royal in modern British history.

Who Was the Duchess of Kent?

Katharine Lucy Mary Worsley was born in 1933 and married Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II.

Throughout her decades of royal service, she earned admiration for her modesty, compassion, and quiet dedication to public life. Unlike many royals, she preferred to stay out of the spotlight and even worked as a music teacher in a state school in Hull.

In 1994, the Duchess made history by converting to Roman Catholicism, a rare move within a family historically tied to the Church of England.

A Historic Funeral at Westminster Cathedral

The Duchess of Kent’s funeral was held at Westminster Cathedral in London — the largest Catholic church in the UK.

The service followed the Requiem Mass tradition and was attended by several senior royals, including:

  • King Charles III

  • Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales

  • Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, her devoted husband of more than 60 years

  • Princess Anne and Princess Alexandra, her sisters-in-law

Queen Camilla was unable to attend due to illness but sent a heartfelt message of condolence.

After the service, the Duchess was laid to rest at the Royal Burial Ground, Frogmore, Windsor — the resting place of many royal family members.
