The Surprising Name Prince Harry Reportedly Used to Compete in an Aspen Polo Match Was Just Revealed

Last week, Prince Harry touched down in Aspen to compete in the St. Regis Snow Polo Championship against his longtime friend, Argentine polo player Nacho Figueras. But apparently, Harry didn’t bring his royal title with him. As a source later told Page Six, “Harry was introduced as Harry Wales, with no royal title mentioned ever or anywhere.”

They added, “He was there to play polo with his best friend Nacho. No titles, just fun.”

But here’s what confusing about the reported choice: Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, formally use Sussex as their last name. So why did he go with Wales?

Born His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales (yes, his real name is Henry, not Harry), the Duke of Sussex went by the name Harry Wales both in school and while serving in the military as an ode to his dad, who was known as the Prince of Wales before becoming king in 2022.

It wasn’t his marriage to Meghan (and the conferment of his new title, the Duke of Sussex) that he adopted the surname Sussex. That said, Harry doesn’t *technically* have a last name, as the official name listed on his son Archie’s birth certificate is His Royal Highness Henry Charles Albert David Duke of Sussex. Fun!

All that is to say: It’s unclear why Harry decided to compete under the moniker Harry Wales rather than Prince Harry or Harry Sussex. But most likely, he was just trying to lay low!

Per Page Six, Harry’s participation in the match was reportedly a total surprise. “No one knew he was coming,” said a source. He also reportedly got injured when Nacho’s son accidentally “clipped” Harry’s hand with his mallet—but fret not, because it seems he’s A-OK.

“They paused for a second and he shook it off,” the insider explained.

And while Meghan wasn’t with Harry in Aspen, she took to her Instagram Stories back home to share a pic of her husband competing, along with the flirty caption, “Oh, hello there.”
