There are many stories of male and female athletes who prepared so much for their races but suffered setbacks like injuries, disqualifications due to false starts, or starting so badly that they didn’t meet their targets. While many athletes have dealt with one or more of these scenarios, it was a different case for female British athlete Emma Pallant-Browne, who made headlines for something many would never have thought about despite it being a natural occurrence.

Pallant-Browne competes in athletics competitions like triathlons, duathlons, and aquathlons. Her fans fondly remember her for winning a silver medal at the World Long Distance Triathlon Championships in 2022, two silver medals at the Iron Man 70.3 in 2017 and 2022, and a European Championship gold medal.

However, Pallant-Brown’s fans would never have thought she would go viral for something unrelated to her sporting achievements. But that was the case after she participated in an event in the PTO Tour European Open in Ibiza in May 2023. After the event, pictures from it were shared on the Professional Triathletes Organisation’s (PTO’s) official page. However, Xavier Coppock, a male athlete, noticed something off about Pallant-Browne’s picture, which many people would never have noticed or thought too much about.

Coppock observed that there was a red stain on the lower part of Pallant-Browne’s pink and blue swimsuit. The stain arose because she ran the race while on her period. Coppock wasn’t pleased with what he saw and quickly commented:

“Not the most flattering photo of Emma, surely they can crop it a bit better.”

Coppock’s comment wasn’t made to spite Pallant-Browne, but it ended up causing controversy. Yet, Pallant-Browne handled it quite well with her response to Coppock’s comment and subsequent post on May 24, 2023. Keep reading to find out what she said.

Pallant-Browne spotted Coppock’s comments and quickly replied to him in the comment section; she said:

“Thanks for caring but definitely something I’m not shy to talk about because it’s the reality of females in sport. My period comes over a month in between and there will be one day where it is super heavy, I pray it won’t be race day but every now and then it is. No matter what tampon I have experimented with, for anything over 3hrs it’s too heavy. So just as someone might get gut issues in a race I have to suck it up and give what I have and not be afraid to talk to women who have the same problem.”

Pallant-Browne went further by making a post on her Instagram to address the situation. The athlete shared the same controversial photo and wrote:

“Humbled by the amount of messages I’ve had from both men and women (I am going to give menstrual cups another go) about the unglamorous reality of racing on your period. 💪 This is true female sport and the more barriers we can break through the better.”

Pallant-Browne explained that she raced in a swimsuit during the event because she overheats and passes out in hot races. Also, her body temperature gets higher during her periods.

Afterward, she shared that the idea to edit the picture meant “there is something wrong with it.” She added:

“If you wrote to me saying 99% of the women you know would be mortified at this then that is exactly why I am sharing this, because there really is nothing wrong.”

Pallant-Browne concluded by urging women to save photos like hers, cherish them, and remember how they performed on a tough day because one day, they “might just be able to help someone else with it.”
