It’s no secret that tensions have been high in the royal family ever since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey aired in March. But the topic of Prince Harry and Prince William’s rift goes back even further than this year. It has appeared that the brothers who were once very close have drifted apart in the last years, and the situation was not made better after Harry married Meghan Markle and announced they would be moving to the United States and leaving their roles as working royals.
However, since they were reunited for the first time since the interview at Prince Philip’s funeral in April, it appears the meeting may have served as a segue towards reconciliation for the brothers. Some reports stated that the body language between them, assessed by body language analyst Adrianne Carter, potentially signaled that Harry and William are taking the first steps to heal the rift between them. The unveiling of the statue in honor of their late mother yesterday also served as an opportunity for the brothers to begin to mend their relationship.
In fact, their beloved mother has long been a uniting factor in their lives, as the two princes have come together in the last few years to honor Diana’s life and legacy. Now, a royal expert has weighed in, stating that she believes Diana would be heartbroken at the state of her sons’ relationship. Even their father Prince Charles is believed to be upset about their falling out. Let’s take a look.

Although the public is not privy to the exact status of Prince William and Prince Harry’s relationship, it’s become clear that in the last years the brothers are no longer as close as they once were, with Harry admitting as much in his and Meghan Markle’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey. And although it appears that the brothers have made small gestures that could signal they’re working to repair their relationship, the situation doesn’t appear to have changed much yet.
Earlier this month People reported that a friend of the family revealed that Prince Charles is “shellshocked by it all” and that he’s “very hurt and upset [by the ongoing fallout].” Now, columnist Jenni Murray writing for the Daily Mail claims that she thinks Princess Diana would be “heartbroken” at her sons’ behavior. Murray writes:
“She would have told her boys to stop being silly, have some respect for others, remember how much they love each other and how much family matters.
“In other words I think she’d be saying, ‘Come on, sons, just grow up!’”
Murray adds that she thinks Diana would have done everything she could to help her sons bond once again. Her opinion corresponds with what another royal expert revealed last year. Royal historian Robert Lacey reported in his 2020 book “Battle of Brothers: William, Harry and the Inside Story of a Family in Tumult” that Diana made her sons promise when they were younger they would always remain best friends and not let anybody get between them. As reported by Express, in the book Lacey spoke with Diana’s psychic Simone Simmons, who claims Diana said to her sons:
“You must promise me that you will always be each other’s best friends. And never let anyone come between you.”

Simmons also stated:
“Both boys promised they would keep to that … They high-fived each other and gave their mother a big cuddle.”
She added that “anybody would have melted at the sight.” Following their big promise to their mother and each other, William and Harry went outside to play soccer. The promise a mother asked of her two sons is incredibly moving, especially knowing what we do regarding the brothers’ falling out in recent years. This is why their potential reconciliation feels even more meaningful — even decades after her death, Diana is still possibly the driving force behind the brothers wanting to become close once again.
The royal brothers have teamed up on a number of projects in honor of their mother in the last few years. Back in 2017, the princes announced the statue that was unveiled yesterday, as part of the 20th anniversary of their mother’s death. At the time they also commissioned two documentaries to honor her life. In “Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy” the brothers spoke for the first time about Diana as their mother. Revealing precious family photographs and sharing memories, the documentary also honors Diana’s charity work. In it, William stated:
“We felt incredibly loved by her, and I’m very grateful that the love still feels there … It feels like a good time to remember her and hopefully provide a different side.”
Meanwhile, Harry said in the documentary:
“It was that love, even though she was on the other side of the room, as her son you could feel it.”
It’s clear that their mother is a strong uniting factor in their lives and perhaps, even in death, she will be the reason behind repairing their relationship.
