Dramatic footage captured the moment a tanker truck exploded in a huge fireball following an accident on an Italian motorway.
Video shows a bright orange flash lighting up the night sky above queued traffic as a loud boom echoes through the Teano service area in Italy’s Caserta province.
Thick smoke then billows into the air as emergency services rush to the scene on the A1 motorway.
The truck exploded following a rear-end collision with another heavy vehicle shortly before 5pm local time on Tuesday.
The crash caused the tanker to catch fire, leading to a powerful explosion.
In the aftermath, firefighters could be seen hosing down the smouldering wreckage and inspecting the damaged buildings.
The blast damaged the roadway, creating craters in the pavement, and affected the nearby service area, including structural damage to the rest stop facility.
The windows of a nearby restaurant were also shattered.
Firefighters from multiple teams, including those from Teano, Caserta, Aversa, and Cassino, all helped to extinguish the flames.



People nearby were evacuated in time, and the drivers involved escaped safely.
No casualties or serious injuries were reported.
The explosion caused major traffic disruptions, temporarily closing the section between Caianello and Capua in both directions.
The northbound lane toward Rome reopened later that evening, while the southbound lane toward Naples remained closed for repairs, resulting in significant delays and detours.

Investigators working with the DuPage County Bomb Squad and ATF quickly determined there was ‘no indication of anything suspicious.’
They incident was ruled as an accident caused by a leaking propane tank in the back of the truck.
