An element of Donald Trump’s outfit at last night’s lavish state dinner has sparked serious confusion online.
The US president, 79, and First Lady, 55, concluded their first full day in the UK (17 September) as the guests of honour at a regal banquet, hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
During the meal, the couple also spent time chatting to Kate Middleton and Prince William, who Trump had nothing but kind words for when he gave them a mention in his speech.
He singled out Charles’ ‘really amazing’ son, the Prince of Wales, as well as the ‘beautiful’ Princess of Wales, who was sitting next to the president for the meal.
Kate looked incredible in a gown by British designer Phillipa Lepley along with a full-length, champagne gold hand-embroidered Chantilly lace evening coat featuring a high collar over a silk crepe gown.
Her earrings belonged to the late Queen and the princess opted for her go-to tiara, the Lover’s Knot Tiara, and wore her hair down and styled in waves.
Trump’s wife Melania however, faced some backlash online for her look – a yellow off-the-shoulder evening gown with a contrasting belt by American designer Carolina Herrera.
The dress also featured a small slit, and the First Lady wore her hair down in loose waves, accessorising with emerald drop earrings.
However, some royal fans were less than impressed with this choice, branding it as ‘not appropriate’ for such a regal event, while others thought it even ‘broke protocol’.
And now, a detail of the US president’s outfit has been scrutinised – and it’s not what you’d expect.
People have zoomed in on a posed photo of Trump with Melania and the King and Queen at the banquet, pointing out that it looks like he’s wearing ‘two different shoes’.
Taking to Twitter, one user questioned: “Is Trump wearing two different shoes?”
To which someone else jokingly responded: “Could be. Whose feet turn up like that while standing? And MC Hammer called. He wants his pants back.”
And a third user agreed: “I was wondering about the feet too. It may be a result of how he always leans forward or from wearing lifts. Or maybe the shoes didn’t fit.”
“Wrong shoe on wrong foot,” guessed someone else, while another theorised: “The thicker shoe keeps his leg from dragging. Leg length discrepancy.”
And one user questioned: “Why aren’t his shoes flat? Like Charles’ shoes.”
This isn’t the first time that Trump’s lower legs have caused quite the stir.
Earlier this year, following his appearance at the Club World Cup final, eagle-eyed spectators noticed that his ankles seemed somewhat swollen as he was pictured sitting beside Melania.
“Trump’s ankles – VERY swollen. People are talking. Doctors? Silent. Media? Going CRAZY,” one asked at the time.
“Could be nothing… could be something BIG. He says he’s strong as ever, but those ankles look like they’ve been through a LOT. Not great. Not great at all.”
“If he put his shoes on when he first got up or shortly after, they may have fit okay then. But once up and walking around, his ankles became more swollen,” another went on. “I will say it’s not that unusual in elderly folks. He’ll probably have shoe-shaped indents when he takes his shoes off.”
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt later confirmed that the reason behind Trump’s swollen ankles was because he’d been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a blood circulation issue.
